400 Vehicles Stopped
Throughout February, the North Bay Police Service (NBPS) conducted a RIDE check to help reinforce the message that impaired driving will not be tolerated in our community.
Targeted enforcement conducted throughout the city, including stationary checkpoints and multiple mobile traffic stops screened for alcohol and drug impairment and traffic compliance. During this initiative:
- Approximately 400 vehicles were checked
- Twelve (12) roadside Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand
- No impaired drivers were detected
These enforcement efforts are part of ongoing commitment to proactive traffic safety and removing impaired drivers from our roads.
“Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after you’ve been drinking or taking drugs endangers you, your passengers and everyone else on the road,” said Sgt. Greg McClenaghan. “Make the right choice and find a sober ride home if you plan on consuming substances that impair your driving abilities.”
Strengthened Impaired Driving Penalties in Effect
As of January 1, 2026, Ontario has significantly strengthened impaired driving penalties under the Highway Traffic Act to enhance road safety. Changes include longer immediate licence suspensions, expanded “look-back” periods for repeat offenders, mandatory education or treatment programs, and tougher consequences for serious or repeat impaired driving incidents — including increased insurance impacts and potential lifetime licence suspensions for offences causing death. Zero-tolerance rules remain in effect for young and novice drivers.
NBPS reminds residents that impaired driving is entirely preventable. One decision can have lasting legal, financial, and personal consequences.
Plan ahead. If you drink or use drugs, don’t drive; arrange a safe ride.
