64 km Mattawa River Race returns Saturday
The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority says nearly 100 paddlers will be cutting the water from Trout Lake to Mattawa on Saturday.
Using 55 canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards they’re taking part in the 64 km Mattawa River Race, from Olmstead Beach in North Bay to the Mattawa Island Conservation Area,
Race officials say another 15 people will join the last 13 km, leaving from Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park.
“We’ve got paddlers coming from all over the province — even a few from New York State,” said race coordinator Paula Loranger. “With so many traveling in for the event, a lot of them will be spending the weekend right here in the community.”
There are 13 categories of racers, making their way through lakes, rivers, fast moving water and up to a dozen portages.
“Registration is closed but come down to Olmsted Beach, North Bay and cheer on the participants as they kick off their 64 km adventure,” adds Loranger.
Races start at 7:30 am on Saturday, with the 13 km event leaving Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park at 12:00 pm.
