August Shoplifting Report

49 Reports from Retailers, 19 Charges Laid
The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is advising the community of ongoing shoplifting-related incidents and sharing safety information for local businesses.
During August 2025, NBPS received 49 criminal complaints regarding shoplifting occurrences. To date, 19 charges have been laid, with the remaining cases under continued investigation. These incidents occurred across a range of retail outlets within our community.
“Shoplifting is not a victimless crime. We share the frustration of those who’ve fallen victim to theft, and we want to bring those responsible to justice,” said A/Deputy Warner. “Every reported case is reviewed, and we are actively working to address thefts in our community. We want to remind business owners that prevention measures and prompt reporting are key in helping us follow through with enforcement on these crimes effectively.”
Safety Information for Retailers:
NBPS encourages store owners and staff to take proactive steps to reduce opportunities for theft:
- Keep aisles well-lit, avoid clutter, and position mirrors or cameras to reduce blind spots.
- Install security cameras at entrances, exits, and high-value product areas.
- Greet customers as they enter; attentive staff can discourage theft.
- Keep high-value items in locked cases or near staffed areas.
- Post clear signs indicating the use of video surveillance and the consequences of theft.
If a Shoplifting Incident Occurs:
- Do not confront suspects directly if it could put you or staff at risk.
- Call police immediately by dialing 911 if the incident is in progress.
- For non-emergencies, report the theft to NBPS at 705-472-1234.
- Retain video footage, witness statements, and any items the suspect left behind.
- Share a clear description of the suspect(s), items stolen, and the time of the incident.
NBPS reminds the community that theft impacts everyone. If you witness a crime in progress or an emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately. For non-emergency police matters, call (705) 472-1234.
