Burns, Peter

Burns, Peter

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our father, Peter William Burns, age 85, of North Bay, Ontario. He passed away peacefully at Nipissing Serenity Hospice, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Kirkland Lake to Peter and Elizabeth Burns, Peter moved to North Bay as a child and grew up on 4th Avenue with his two brothers and three sisters, forming lifelong friendships with neighbourhood children.

After graduating from Carleton University, he earned his Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto, fulfilling his lifelong passion for education.

A devoted teacher and administrator, Peter was dedicated to his students and colleagues, often attending school events and taking joy in reconnecting with former students.

Peter’s many talents and hobbies included woodworking, antique furniture refinishing, and lapidary art, each reflecting his patience and craftsmanship. He enjoyed walking, reading, cooking family dinners, and was especially known for his legendary French toast breakfasts.

A thoughtful, steady, and family-centred man, Peter cherished time spent with loved ones, whether around the dinner table, on family trips, or cheering for the Leafs. He will be remembered for his generosity, quiet strength, wise counsel, and witty sense of humour.

Peter is survived by his daughters Lori Burns (John McNutt), Kim Rivet (Andre Rivet), and Tara Burns (Mark Brown), and by his first wife Glenda Mikawa. He was a proud grandfather to Julia Rivet; Jacob and Benjamin Burns Brown; Nicholas and James Rivet; and Alexandra Leggett. Predeceased by his partner Carolyn Kennedy, he is survived by her children Robin Purcell (Mike), John Alexander (Barb), Kara Kennedy-Macie (Greg Macie), and Gillian Wilson (Mark), and dearly remembered as “Grampa Peter” to Satchel Purcell, Sam and Ben Alexander, Michael Wilson, and Annaugh and Holly Macie.

The visitation will be held at Martyn Funeral Home, North Bay, on Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place at the Pro-Cathedral on Monday, October 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nipissing Serenity Hospice or KidSport.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Blair Bowker, Dr. Khan, Dr. Jinna, Chuck from VON, Personal Support Workers from Care Partners and the compassionate staff of the Nipissing Serenity Hospice. Condolences may be offered online at www.martynfh.com.
