Camping returns to Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park in May

The countdown is on to a partial reopening at Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park.

Ontario Parks says along with some day use areas, Babawasse Campground will reopen on May 8.

Officials say it features electrical campsites (1-74) and a comfort station.

“We’re so proud of the amazing efforts to rebuild after the devasting microburst storm of June 2025,” reads a post on social media. “Please be aware that the park is still in restoration mode due to the significant damage experienced from the storm.”

Officials say certain sections of the park, including the entire west side of the park, remain closed.

They also say visitors may experience noise and intermittent disruptions as they continue restoration efforts.

In November, the province announced $4.75 million to rebuild and upgrade the park to become a year-round operation.

The province says last June’s downburst knocked down tens of thousands of trees and damaged park infrastructure, with 300 people safely evacuated.
