City police issue urgent public safety alert involving overdose deaths

By Richard Coffin

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is advising of a significant increase in drug overdose deaths in North Bay.

They’ve issued an urgent public safety alert.

Officials say they’re investigating, adding early indications suggest the unregulated drug supply may be contaminated.

“We urge community members, service providers, friends, and families to share this message and check in on those who may be at risk,” states a release.

If you use drugs:
• Do not use alone.
• Carry naloxone and ensure you know how to use it.
• Start with a small test dose.
• Know your condition and tolerance.
• Call 911 immediately in an emergency.

Signs of an overdose or drug poisoning may include:
• Slow, irregular, or no breathing
• Blue or gray lips and fingernails
• Unresponsiveness
• Choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds
• Cold or clammy skin
• Pinpoint pupils
• Seizures or severe confusion

Police say if you suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately.

Stay with the person until help arrives and administer naloxone if available.

They say in Ontario, the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides some legal protection for those seeking emergency help during an overdose.

“While the exact cause has not yet been confirmed, this increase represents a serious concern about potentially toxic substances in the unregulated drug supply,” police advise. “This is an evolving situation, and NBPS is working closely with public health and community partners to gather more information.”

For more information on naloxone kits and where to get them, please call a local pharmacy or visit the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit:
