Community Alert! Facebook Marketplace Fraud Attempt in North Bay

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) has received a report of a suspected fraud attempt related to an online posting on Facebook Marketplace. This matter is currently under investigation.
In this case, a seller listed a vehicle for sale. During a viewing, two males posing as potential buyers requested a flashlight to look under the hood. When the seller returned with the flashlight, the vehicle would no longer start. The buyers then attempted to negotiate a significantly lower price, citing the vehicle’s condition. After inspection by a licensed mechanic, it is suspected that the vehicle may have been intentionally damaged.
To support safe transactions, the NBPS provides designated Buy & Sell Exchange Zones located in front of police headquarters at 135 Princess Street West. This space is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We encourage all community members to use these spots when meeting buyers or sellers from online platforms.
Your safety is our priority.
Safety Tips to Protect Yourself from Online Buy & Sell Scams:

- Never leave potential buyers alone with your property.
- Bring a friend or family member with you when meeting buyers or sellers.
- Trust your instincts if something feels off, end the meeting.
