Construction underway on 60 new affordable housing units for seniors

By Richard Coffin

60 new affordable housing units for seniors are on the way to the city.

The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) has partnered with the city on the project, with approval for the new units received through the Federal Housing Accelerator Fund.

Construction is underway at the former J.W. Trussler School on Cartier Street, expanding on the existing building operated by North Bay Regional Health Centre.

The hospital provides transitional care for patients awaiting transfer to long-term care.

“This project is an important step in meeting the need for affordable housing for seniors in our community,” says Mayor Peter Chirico. “The city is pleased to support this initiative alongside our partners, helping ensure older residents can live safely, comfortably, and with dignity here in North Bay.”

DNSSAB officials say the new initiative will bring the total number of spaces to over 100, exclusively serving seniors.

Existing spaces are operated by the hospital, while the new units are reserved for seniors registered on DNSSAB’s Centralized Waitlist.

“As our community grows older, safe and affordable housing is more important than ever for supporting the well-being and independence of our seniors,” says Mark King, DNSSAB Chair. “This project shows what’s possible when organizations work together with a shared commitment to inclusion and care. We are proud to support initiatives that help seniors stay connected, comfortable, and secure in the community they helped shape.”

Each new unit will include accessibility features to ensure safety and comfort for residents, who will also have access to essential health and social services through DNSSAB’s Community Paramedicine Program and partnerships with the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
