Depending on the will of council, the next Mayor of North Bay could be getting a more than 35% pay increase.

A councillor motion coming to Tuesday night’s meeting is calling for the mayor’s remuneration to jump to $115,000 a year.

According to the motion, it’s just under $85,000 right now and ranks the lowest compared to other northern municipalities and neighbours.

The motion’s preamble says it is desirable to attract diverse, qualified candidates for the office, the position requires full time dedication to manage complex municipal issues, multimillion-dollar budgets, manage relationships with other levels of government, and more.

It also points to the option of assuming strong mayor’s powers with enhanced executive authority.

The motion calls for the increase to come into effect on Jan. 1, 2027.

As of Friday morning, there’s one candidate for mayor in the Oct. 26 election.

Connor Currie has filed his nomination papers.
