Eagles comeback to defeat Voodoos

Responding from a one-goal deficit midway through the second period, the Soo Eagles countered with a trio of unanswered tallies to defeat the Powassan Voodoos 4-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Voodoos notched the initial marker on the evening 10:51 into the contest when Owen Head finished off a nice rush up ice by Braeden Begley by snapping a shot over the blocker of Eagles’ netminder Jace Knoerle.

Pulling even a few minutes later, Sault Ste. Marie’s Logan Stawizynski roofed a wrister high over the shoulder of Powassan’s Derrick Champagne.

Moving to the middle frame, the home side went back on top via the power play as Anthony Boyes lifted in the leftovers off a Ryan Saginaw shot.

Answering back, the Eagles tallied twice in the back half of the session to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

After Anden Marceau tied it a 13:11 by darting around a pair of defenders and tucking the puck by the pad of Champagne, Ilian Danilov pumped one in off a screen from the slot at 16:02.

Heading to the third period, the score remained the same until the late going when Marceau put one into the empty net for the Soo to secure the road victory.

The win sees the Eagles improve to 9-14-0-1 and with the loss, the Voodoos dropped to 12-6-0-2.
