FedNor funding for nearly two dozen northern tourism projects

22 tourism industry projects, businesses, and organizations across Northern Ontario are getting federal funding.

FedNor Minister Patty Hajdu announced over $4.5 million for the tourism projects.

In our area, the list includes nearly $190,000 for the Village of South River to refurbish the train station, while maintaining the postcard charm of the building built in 1885.

The money will be used to capitalize on opportunities created with the impending return of Northlander passenger rail service.

Officials say the station will be transformed into a fully accessible building with new washrooms, wi-fi and interpretive displays.

Meantime, the Magnetawan River Resort receives just over $200,000 to help transform into an all-season facility.

Among other things, the project includes upgrading existing cottages, installing new heating systems, and creating up to 10 new overnight RV sites.

Another $55,000 goes to South Algonquin.

It was used to complete a master plan to help identify and advance economic development and tourism priorities.

Hajdu also announced an updated Prosperity & Growth Strategy for Northern Ontario.

“The economic landscape has seen many changes over the last five years and communities in Northern Ontario deserve new opportunities for economic development,” she says.  “Whether it is harnessing new investment opportunities or supporting careers in the tourism industry, today’s announcement is critical to maximizing Northern Ontario’s full potential, in collaboration with communities and organizations across the region.”

Ottawa says the strategy is intended to support and amplify current and ongoing Government of Canada programs and collaborations to address the needs of Northern Ontario’s residents and communities over the next five years.
