FONOM opposing province’s move to ban automated speed cameras

The province’s move to ban automated speed cameras across Ontario is being opposed by The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM).

FONOM says the ban would undermine municipal efforts to improve road safety and protect children and pedestrians in the North.

Officials say many municipalities, including Greater Sudbury, have already invested in programs and entered in long-term agreements to lease equipment and process offences and cancelling those programs would create unnecessary financial and administrative burdens for local governments.

Officials say automated speed enforcement should remain a local choice – and they want to support a collaborative approach with the province to improve road safety, not weaken it.
