Fraud investigation leads to charges
A 26-year-old Brant resident is facing a fraud over $5,000 charge in North Bay after a city police investigation
Police say a local resident was targeted and deceived into providing over $14,000 for an alleged emergency involving a close friend.
They say a person claiming to be the friend’s lawyer coordinated cash pickups – with an arrest made around 1130 on Tuesday morning.
A 2009 Mercedes was seized as part of the investigation.
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
“Please remain alert, as we are seeing an increase in scams targeting local residents, and not just older adults. Fraudsters exploit emotions and pressure victims into quick decisions,” says Inspector Scott McFarlane. “It can be very difficult to investigate fraud-related activity. This type of investigation is complex, and our members continue to work diligently to protect the safety of our community.”.
City police encourage the public to report suspicious activity and remain alert. If you believe you’ve been a victim of fraud, please call 705-497-5555 (option 5) to speak with an officer or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
