Greater Sudbury solid in road win at Powassan

Busting open a tie game halfway through the proceedings, the Greater Sudbury Cubs banged in five unanswered goals to skate away with a 7-2 win over the Powassan Voodoos in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Converting on a two-man advantage midway through the first period, the Cubs’ Nolan Newton wired a short-side wrister over the glove of Voodoos’ netminder Cole Vreugdenhil from the right circle.

Notching another in the final moments of a frame, Kaedyn Long made it 2-0 Cubs when he pulled up after taking a pass from Caden Dubreuil on the left side and ripped it upstairs at 19:55.

Powassan cut the deficit in half early in the second stanza thanks to Cayden Kowal who neatly tipped in a left point shot by Ben Gisonni that got by Greater Sudbury’s Mateo Beites at 2:24.

The tally gives Kowal points in six consecutive contests.

Pulling even just over five minutes later, the Voodoos chased down a dump in that led to Mason Brownlee stuffing in a rebound from a Frank Popkie chance, who picked up a point with the assist in his season debut.

Regrouping, the Cubs scored twice in the back half of the session to take a 4-2 lead after two.

A surging Mason Walker found the back of the net for the seventh time in five games as he took his time on the left side then wired one in from a tight angle.

Then up a skater, Daks Klinkhammer added to the lead at 17:25 as he redirected in a Spencer Horgan point attempt.

Early in the third, the guests benefitted from a turnover that allowed Eidan Macartney to go in uncontested and bury an unassisted shorthanded effort.

Capping off the road victory in the back half of the session, Noah Kohan cranked in a blast during a power play and Horgan lifted one in at even strength to wrap-up the scoring.

The triumph raises Greater Sudbury’s record to 10-5-1-0 and in defeat, Powassan falls to 9-3-0-1.
