Man Arrested with Suspected Fentanyl Following Traffic Stop
The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) arrested a Toronto man after a traffic stop led to the discovery of suspected fentanyl, illicit cannabis, and an edged weapon.
At approximately 1:45 p.m. on March 8, the NBPS Patrol Section conducted a traffic stop for a passenger not wearing a seatbelt. During the stop, the accused exited the vehicle and was observed throwing an item a short distance away. Upon investigation, the item was suspected to be fentanyl. The accused was arrested without incident, and a subsequent search revealed illicit cannabis and an edged weapon.
The accused, Tyriq Simpson, 18-year-old, male, of, Toronto Ontario, has been charged with:
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Fentanyl)
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
- Carrying Concealed Weapon
- Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
- Possess Illicit Cannabis
- Possess Illicit Cannabis (under 19)
- Passenger Fail to Wear Seatbelt
Subsequent search led to the seizure of the following items:
- Controlled substances with an estimated street value of over $7,600 including:
- 38 grams Fentanyl
- 11 grams of illicit Cannabis
- $103 Canadian currency
“Every day, our members see the impact that fentanyl and other illegal drugs can have on individuals, families, and our community,” said A/Insp. Hampel. “Even a routine traffic stop, such as this, can make a big difference, as we fight to remove these dangerous substances from our streets.”
The accused was arrested and held in custody pending a bail hearing.
