NBPS Issues Snowbank Safety Reminder

NBPS Issues Snowbank Safety Reminder

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is reminding the community to exercise caution around snowbanks this winter.

Heavy snowfall and plowing can create hazards for drivers, pedestrians, and children playing outside.

Snowbanks can reduce visibility, narrow road lanes, and hide vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles. Drivers are urged to slow down, give extra space, and be especially careful when approaching intersections and backing in or out of driveways or navigating narrowed lanes.

Pedestrians should avoid walking on roadways whenever possible, as sidewalks may be blocked by snow. If walking near roads, stay visible with reflective clothing or lights, cross streets at cleared areas, and be alert to vehicles. Children should be supervised closely and discouraged from climbing on or building snow tunnels in snowbanks near roadways.

“Snowbanks can create serious safety risks, especially for children,” says Insp. McFarlane. “Slow down, watch for each other, and take a few extra moments to stay safe. A little caution goes a long way in keeping our community safe this winter.”

Tips for Staying Safe Around Snowbanks:

  • Drive slowly and leave extra distance from other vehicles.
  • Be cautious when approaching intersections and backing in or out of driveways; lanes may be narrower and create blind spots.
  • Use sidewalks whenever possible; avoid walking on roadways.
  • Ensure children stay away from snowbanks near streets.
  • Wear reflective clothing or carry a light when walking near roads at night or during snowstorms.
  • Keep fire hydrants and emergency access clear of snow.
