NOCA provincial playdowns underway

By Richard Coffin

A couple of local curling teams are back on the pebbled ice Wednesday morning at the North Bay Granite Club.

Team Riley Winters and Team Jeff Brown both opened the men’s Northern Ontario provincial championship with losses on Tuesday.

It’s a triple-knockout event.

Defending champion Team John Epping won the first match of tournament.

The women’s northern championship is also being played at the Granite Club.

Local team Abby Deschene opens the event against defending champ Team Krista Scharf Wednesday night.

Team Joanne Forget plays its first-round robin game Thursday morning.

Winners of the events will represent Northern Ontario at the national curling championships, the Montana’s Brier for the men and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts for the women.
