Northern highways discussed on Parliament Hill
Northern Ontario and rural municipal leaders are making sure transportation infrastructure in our neck of the woods remains part of the national conversation.

Several groups, including the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM), sat down with Federal Transportation Minister Steven MacKinnon, FedNor Minister Patty Hajdu and Ontario’s Northern Economic Development and Growth Minister George Pirie this week in Ottawa.
FONOM says the meeting focused on the importance of continued investments in highway twinning, targeted safety improvements, transportation reliability, strengthening the movement of people and goods across Northern Ontario and Canada, and more.

They also say Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association president Rick Dumas briefly connected directly with Prime Minister Mark Carney, and shared Northern Ontario municipal priorities, including the modernization of Highways 11 and 17.
“Northern municipalities continue to advocate for meaningful investments that improve safety, strengthen economic competitiveness, and ensure our communities remain connected year-round,” says Dave Plourde, President of FONOM. “We appreciated the collaborative and constructive dialogue with Minister MacKinnon, Minister Hajdu, and Minister Pirie.”
FONOM says all parties agreed to continue building on the discussions and work collaboratively toward advancing meaningful action on highway expansion, safety improvements, and more.
