November Marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS), in partnership with Victim Services of Nipissing District (VSND), recognizes November as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month highlights the significant impact of domestic violence on our community. It provides an opportunity to educate the public on recognizing the signs of abuse, understanding available resources, and encouraging victims and witnesses to seek help safely.

"Our members continue to receive specialized education and training focused on early intervention, trauma-informed response, and prevention strategies. Awareness and education are key, and through collaboration with community partners, we can work together for a safer community."

"Our goal is to lessen the emotional trauma experienced by victims by providing immediate practical and emotional support in the event of crime or tragic circumstances," says Kathleen Jodouin, Executive Director of Victim Services of Nipissing District. "Our non-profit organization provides 24/7 short-term crisis support. Our client-centered approach empowers individuals through information, choice, and self-determination, allowing them to make well-informed decisions to assist in their own healing journey."

Quick Facts About Domestic Violence:

  • 1 in 3 Canadian women will experience at least one incident of physical or sexual violence in her lifetime.
  • Domestic violence affects people of all genders, ages, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Children who witness domestic violence are at long-term risk of emotional and psychological trauma.
  • Only a fraction of incidents are reported to police, making awareness and support crucial.
  • Early intervention and access to support services can significantly reduce harm.

The NBPS and VSND encourage community members to learn about the supports and resources available and understand the signs of abuse. By increasing awareness and knowledge, we can all take proactive steps to help prevent domestic and gender-based violence. Together, we can create a safer, more supportive community where all residents feel respected and protected in their homes.
