Operation Safe Space Targets Public Drug Use
The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) Street Crime Unit (SCU) launched Operation Safe Space in May 2026, a targeted enforcement initiative focused on public drug use, drug trafficking, and related crime in the downtown core.
The initiative targets people involved in criminal activity that contributes to public drug use. Officers are making arrests and laying charges to help improve community safety and reduce the impact of public drug activity on residents, businesses and visitors.
The NBPS has increased foot and bike patrols in areas experiencing higher levels of social disorder and opened a downtown police storefront in June 2025 to improve police visibility, accessibility and community engagement. Feedback has been positive, with many reporting improved safety and a stronger police presence.
Public drug use remains one of the most significant public safety challenges facing communities across Ontario. The SCU continues to target those responsible for supplying illegal drugs and disrupting the supply of illegal drugs entering our community, working towards stronger enforcement outcomes.
In 2025, the unit completed 26 drug trafficking investigations where 238 charges were laid and more than $890,000 worth of illicit drugs, along with 22 firearms were seized.
Under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, trafficking is broadly defined and does not require the exchange of money. A person may be charged with trafficking by selling, giving, administering, transporting or offering to provide a controlled substance to another person.
"Public drug use continues to affect our community, though we are happy with the progress being made," said Acting Deputy Jeff Warner. “We recognize enforcement alone is not enough. Lasting progress will require continued collaboration with our community partners, and connecting vulnerable individuals with available community supports."
Operation Safe Space is part of NBPS’s ongoing efforts to reduce public drug use, as investigations continue to disrupt the supply of illegal drugs. The goal is to ensure public spaces remain safe for everyone.
