Protect Yourself from Student Targeted Scams

As students settle into a new school year, the North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is reminding college and university students to stay vigilant against fraud and scams. Scammers often target students seeking rentals, textbooks, electronics, or financial assistance, and NBPS is here to help you avoid becoming a victim.

Common types of fraud affecting students:

  • Rental Scams
Beware of online listings asking for deposits or full payment for apartments that don’t exist. Always view rentals in person and verify the landlord’s identity before paying.
  • Merchandise Fraud
Be cautious when buying textbooks, electronics, or furniture online. Never pay in advance and confirm you receive the item as described.
  • Phishing Attempts
Ignore urgent emails or texts requesting personal or financial information. Always verify claims directly with the institution.
  • Tuition and Loan Scams
Offers of unusually low-interest loans or tuition assistance may be fraudulent. Watch for upfront fees or requests for personal financial details—if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Use the “Take 5, Tell 2” approach:

Take 5 minutes to stop and think before acting on any unexpected offer or request.

Tell 2 trusted people (friends, family, or advisors) before making decisions involving money or personal information.

Tips to Protect Yourself:

  • Always meet landlords or sellers in person and verify their credentials.
  • Use secure, traceable payment methods; avoid cash or wire transfers.
  • Be skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true.
  • Verify messages claiming urgent financial obligations directly with the institution.
  • Keep personal and financial information private unless certain of the recipient’s legitimacy.

If you believe you’ve been targeted by a scam, or notice suspicious activity, contact NBPS at 705-497-5555 (option 5). You can also submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.nearnorthcrimestoppers.com.

NBPS is committed to helping students stay safe and informed. By staying alert and asking questions, you can protect yourself and your finances while enjoying your school year.
