Strong 2nd period lifts Voodoos over Storm
Riding the strength of a four-goal second period, the Powassan Voodoos went on to knock off the Iroquois Falls Storm 4-2 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Sunday matinee at Jus Jordan Arena.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, and up a skater to begin the middle stanza, Powassan’s Dylan Rousselle darted up ice out of his own zone and while driving down the right wing, fired a shot that Iroquois Falls goaltender Virgil Sausset-Plateaux could only get a piece of before it bounced over him and into the net.
On the power play once more, Ryan Saginaw used traffic in front to make it 2-0 Voodoos when he wired one in through a screen from the left circle for his team-leading 16th of the season.
Tacking on two more in the back half of the frame, the Voodoos extended their lead to four into the second intermission.
Another by Rousselle provided the third for the visitors as he backhanded in his own rebound off a down-low feed from Parker Bonsignore.
Marcus Krats then capped off the outburst as he knocked in a close-range chance on a delayed penalty at 17:40.
Moving to the final frame, the Storm finally solved Powassan netminder Cole Vreugdenhil 1:53 in as Avery Wease took a drop pass from Benjamin Coupal and wired it into the bottom left corner from the high slot.
Iroquois Falls got one more via a buzzer-beater courtesy of Connor Desbois as he jammed one in at 19:59 to round out the scoring.
With the win, the Voodoos raised their record to 14-7-0-2, while in defeat the Storm dropped to 8-16-0-2.
