Tailgaters being targeted by city police
The North Bay Police Service says its traffic unit is targeting tailgaters.
Officers are stepping up enforcement on drivers who follow too closely, something police say is a leading cause of preventable collisions.
In the 92 days from Nov. 1, 2025 to Jan. 31, 2026, they say there were 85 rear-end collisions in North Bay.

According to the Highway Traffic Act, drivers must not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, considering:
- Speed, traffic, and road conditions
- Visibility and hazards
- Vehicle type, tires, brakes, and aggressive driving
- The chance of a collision if the vehicle ahead stops suddenly
Penalties for passenger vehicles include:
- $110 fine + 4 demerit points
- $150 in community safety zones
Police say most collisions in North Bay can be avoided when drivers respect the speed limit, avoid using cellphones while driving and leave enough space to anticipate, react, and stop — especially on slippery roads.
