Timmins tops Powassan to win 8th straight

Continuing their winning ways, the Timmins Rock collected their eighth straight Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Friday, downing the Powassan Voodoos 3-1 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

A red-hot Brant Romaniuk put the Rock in front with his 20th goal of the season as he neatly side-stepped around a defender then wired a rising attempt over the glove of Voodoos’ netminder Derrick Champagne 5:20 into the proceedings.

With the tally, Romaniuk runs a point streak to 10 consecutive contests where he has notched 13 markers and helped set-up a dozen others in that span.

Still 1-0 Timmins into the second stanza, they tacked on two more to extend their lead.

On the power play, Lucas Lowe banked one in off of Champagne from a sharp angle before Ashton Beriana collected his initial NOJHL goal with an even strength effort as he finished off an Evan Katic feed on a two-on-one by ripping it upstairs at 10:26.

In a penalty-filled final frame, Powassan put an end to Rock goalkeeper Frédéric Cousineau’s shutout bid on a man advantage effort with just over a minute to go as Ryan Saginaw whipped in his 14th of the year, into the open side.

That proved to the night’s final goal as Timmins continued their winning ways, improving to 14-5-0-1 overall.

With the loss, the Voodoos fell to 12-7-0-2.
