Two area intern positions being funded by Ottawa
FedNor funding is helping create 14 paid internships across the north, including locally.
Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced more than $735,000 for the youth employment opportunities.
Locally, there’s money for Discovery North Bay Museum to hire a digital development intern for 18 months to implement a five-year Digital Strategy. They will also provide support to the North Bay Heritage Railway & Carousel company.
The City of North Bay also receives funding to bring in a youth intern for 18 months.
They will help advance Housing Accelerator Fund Initiatives, evaluate the effectiveness of housing strategies, and more.
“Young people are crucial to Northern Ontario’s future,” says Hajdu. “These internships will help youth gain valuable experience and develop the confidence they need to succeed in the workforce. By connecting talented young people with local employers, we are helping them build rewarding careers close to home while contributing to the future of their communities.”
The money comes from FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program.
Ottawa says since Nov 2015, FedNor’s Youth Internship Initiative has supported 283 internships, helping young people start their careers in Northern Ontario.
Officials add 64% of those interns stayed with their host employer, 83% found jobs related to their internship and 91% continued working in Northern Ontario.
