Voodoos halt Rock winning streak at 21

Getting two goals from Jax Pereira helped the Powassan Voodoos defeat the Timmins Rock 5-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Tuesday night at McIntyre Arena.

The result sees Powassan put an end to Timmins’ 21-game winning streak, which tied them for the fifth longest in NOJHL history.

After withstanding the Rock’s initial man advantage of the contest, earlier in the session, the Voodoos capitalized on their first power play opportunity to open the scoring at 12:16 of the opening frame.

On the tally, Pereira took a dish from Marcus Krats and cut through the middle and into the slot where he wired a shot off the post and in, beating a screened Ayden Mullen in the Timmins net.

Powassan wasted little time in adding to their lead in the middle stanza when Benjamin Coupal connected 41 seconds in as he took a pass from Dylan Rousselle, skated across the blueline and roofed a rising wrist shot over the shoulder of Mullen.

Cutting into the deficit five minutes later, Evan Katic put the Rock on the board when he neatly deflected in a Zach Secord attempt from the left point that bounced past goalkeeper Derrick Champagne.

The home side then drew level at 11:57 as Maxx Hamelin steered in cross-ice pass put his way from Edan Etheridge.

Answering back to retake the lead in the waning moments of the second, Powassan’s Ryan Saginaw took his time out front and snapped in his team-leading 22nd marker of the season with defenders jumbled up in the crease.

Heading to the third, the Voodoos went back up by a pair while up a skater when Justin Rousseau chipped in a rebound off a Krats shot at 8:01.

The visitors then added some insurance a minute and a half later when Pereira collected the leftovers of a Jackson Culin attempt from up top and moved to his left and tucked in his second of the night to round out the scoring.

With the result, Powassan won their fourth in a row to improve to 23-9-0-2 overall.

In suffering their first setback since back on October 18, Timmins record falls to 27-6-0-1.
