“At Canadore College we deliver job ready skills that help students, employers and Northern Ontario succeed in the fast-changing economy, and we look forward to continuing to do that well into the future,” she says.

Efu says the highlight at the college so far has been the employees.

“Canadore has such fantastic faculty and support staff that are truly committed to offering a positive student experience,” she says. “It’s been fantastic just learning what everybody does and seeing the passion behind all the work that is done here at Canadore.”

She says Canadore is a strong community partner and is central in supporting industry and business, adding objectives are to build on that success by focusing on students, supporting employees, and more.

“Making sure we’re continuing to strengthen our community partnerships, empowering Indigenous learners and businesses, driving innovation and supporting overall regional economic development,” says Efu.

One challenge is provincial funding, with colleges saying they face a structural deficit of $1.5 billion by 2027-28.

Advocacy work continues.

“We need the financial support,” says Efu.  “We need the government to provide funding, increase the operating grant, so institutions can continue to do what they do best – which is training learners and ensuring business have the talent that they need.”

As for the city, she says North Bay has been a wonderful and welcoming community with people being positive, encouraging and looking forward to supporting the work ahead.

Efu also says she’s looking forward to warmer days, considering all the snow and cold weather so far.
