Five new passing lanes coming to Hwy 11
Fourteen kilometres of new passing lanes are being added to Highway 11 in Northeastern Ontario.
That announcement from the province, which also announced its replacing the Hearst truck inspection station.
Officials say the new passing lanes are located in five different townships (Benoit, Calder, Gill, Grenfill and Kendrey) along the highway.
Most are in the Cochrane District with one in Temiskaming District.
“Keeping northern highways safe and reliable is a priority for our government,” says Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “That is why we’re building the infrastructure needed to protect drivers and support economic growth. The new inspection station will be a game changer for strengthening commercial vehicle enforcement, while new passing lanes will improve traffic flow, and support the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across Northern Ontario.”
The province says the existing inspection station in Hearst is currently being demolished with scale replacement, and a new pre-engineered building expected to be completed this December.
“By adding new passing lanes and replacing the inspection station in Hearst, our government is improving safety for passenger and commercial vehicles along Highway 11,” says George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “This vital corridor supports the movement of people and goods across northern Ontario and connects communities throughout the province and the country.”
The province says every day, truck drivers transport an estimated $3-billion worth of goods on provincial highways.
