Gordon McCloskey

Gordon McCloskey

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Gord McCloskey, aged 88, on July 4th at Northern Heights Community.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Barb (nee Wallace), married 67 years, and his daughters Nancyanne (Bruce) and Barbara Jean (Bob).  He was the proud grandfather “Poppa/Grandpa” to grandchildren Brad (Zoee), Scott, Tracey (Chris) and Calli (Andrey) and great-grandfather “Grandpa Gord” to Teagan, Alexxa, Mya, Turner, Brady, Tilden, Hailey and Sora.  Predeceased by his parents, Ernest (Bud) and Edith McCloskey, and sister Glenda (George).

Gord lived a full life, despite suffering from dementia during the past few years.  His happiest moments were at the cottage at Tomiko, where he embraced the outdoors in both summer and winter.  He enjoyed countless gatherings with family and friends, where his music-making was often in demand.  Gord loved country music, and was a gifted musician, playing both the piano and guitar by ear. His cherished Gibson guitar, “Gibby”, accompanied him almost everywhere (by skidoo, motorcycle, boat and truck!)

One of Gord’s proudest achievements was becoming a fixed wing pilot.  His inaugural long distance flight was from North Bay to Belleville, to meet his first grandchild, the day after the birth.

Employed by the Ontario Northland Railway for 35 years, Gord held positions as a telegrapher in Tomiko and North Bay.  He enjoyed a long retirement, travelling to Spain each winter between 2014 and 2021.

The family would like to thank the staff of Northern Heights Community for the care and compassion they provided to Gord over the past 8 months.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Gord’s life at Hillside Funeral Service, 362 Airport Road, North Bay on Sunday, July 12th.  Visitation begins at 1:00 pm, followed by tributes at 2:30 pm.  Online condolences can be provided at www.hillsidefuneral.ca.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation (Long Term Care), or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
