Mayor says three-year deal brings stability to Laurentian Ski Hill
There’s good news for skiers and snowboarders in the area.
A three-year lease and operating agreement has been approved by council to formalize the Laurentian Ski Hill and Snowboarding Club’s operation of the hill.
“This agreement provides stability for Laurentian Ski Hill and a clear framework for the City and the Club moving forward,” said Mayor Peter Chirico. “Laurentian Ski Hill is an important recreational asset for North Bay and the region. This agreement helps ensure it remains available to the community and that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy the property and facilities.”
An annual lease fee of $32,500 will be paid to the city, while the city will continue to provide subsidies of $60,000 a year for operations, $65,000 annually for capital projects and $100,000 for contingency.
“Our team at the Laurentian Ski Hill and Snowboarding Club is thrilled to continue providing exceptional skiing, snowboarding, and on-hill recreational activities to the people of North Bay,” says Duncan Cornthwaite, Executive Director. “We look forward to working closely with the City and our many valued stakeholders to ensure a vibrant and active future for our community.”
Earlier this year, the city bought about 50 hectares of land from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority, including the ski hill and related buildings and facilities.
Officials say the city will remain at arm’s length from the club’s operations, adding the club will provide financial information and business plans to the city each year.
