Ready for School Resource Fair lined up for Thursday
There’s still just under four weeks of summer vacation left, but an event on Thursday is looking to connect families with the resources needed for a successful school year.
United Way Centraide North East Ontario is hosting its Ready for School Resource Fair, bringing together schools, community organizations and local service providers.
Officials say for many families, the excitement of a new school year is accompanied by the growing cost of supplies, clothing and extracurricular activities.
They say beyond the financial pressures, many parents are also trying to navigate a wide range of school and community supports—often without knowing where to start.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to start the school year feeling confident and ready to learn,” says Tamika Daniels, Regional Manager – Nipissing/Parry Sound, United Way Centraide North East Ontario. “While many people think of pencils and backpacks when they hear ‘back to school,’ families often need access to much more—whether it’s after-school programs, mental health supports, recreation opportunities, transportation information or community services. The Ready for School Fair brings those resources together under one roof.”
The event will take place Thursday, Aug. 13 (4-7 pm) at the Elmwood Hub located at 140 Elmwood Ave.
Families will have the opportunity to connect directly with local organizations and learn about:
· School supports and educational programs
· Community services for children and families
· Recreation, wellness and youth programs
· Family resources and supports
· Free giveaways, prizes and interactive activities
Along with interactive activities with Science North and TVO, children can also explore a fire truck courtesy of North Bay Fire and Emergency Services.
“Our goal isn’t simply to prepare children for the first day of school,” adds Daniels. “It’s to help families build connections that support their children’s success all year long. When families know where to find help, children are better positioned to thrive.”
There’s no cost of admission to the resource fair.
The first day of school is Sept. 8.
