North Bay OPP promoting rail safety
By Richard Coffin This is Rail Safety Week across Canada, and the Ontario Provincial Police locally is encouraging safe decisions around tracks and crossings.
On Tuesday, officers with the North Bay OPP detachment were at railway crossings in Bonfield, Powassan and East Ferris sharing rail safety information.
It was done as part of Operation Clear Track, an annual initiative led by Operation Lifesaver Canada that brings together law enforcement agencies, first responders, railway partners and others to raise awareness and help prevent rail crossing and trespassing incidents. The OPP says rail safety is a shared responsibility.
“Everyone has a role to play by making safe choices around railway tracks and crossings and encouraging others to do the same,” states a release.
The North Bay OPP and Operation Lifesaver Canada remind the public to:
· Stay off railway tracks and property
· Expect a train at any time
· Stay alert and avoid distractions
· Cross tracks only at designated railway crossings
· Obey railway signs and warning devices
