Potential Sherman Tank display at Lee Park would honour Algonquin Regiment
The CF-100 Canuck at Lee Park could soon be joined by a Sherman Tank.
A staff report coming to council Tuesday night, says the Canadian War Museum has provided the rare opportunity to loan a tank to the city for 10 years, in recognition of its history with the Algonquin Regiment.
If approved, a static display would be set up at Lee Park, right near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Judge Avenue.
“This display will be another opportunity to demonstrate North Bay’s long-term recognition and commitment to the Canadian Armed Forces,” states the report. “This Sherman Tank will be prepared with a paint and marking scheme that pays tribute to the first Sherman Tank HVSS assigned to the Algonquin Regiment.”
A successful loan agreement would still need to be negotiated.
In Feb. 1955, the Algonquin Regiment changed to an armoured unit and received its first 37-ton Sherman Tank.
