Sound Travels Festival launches with Pride concert
New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) kicks off its 28th annual Sound Travels Festival with a Pride concert Saturday night.

It’s sponsored by Almaguin Pride and features Kat Estacio and Barry Truax, 2SLGBTQI+ sound artists from different generations.
The opening concert starts at 6 pm at NAISA’s Media Arts Centre on Highway 124, in South River.

“This years’ Sound Travels events explore the ‘Sound Culture’ of Water—how the sound of water is shaped by its cultural use, spiritual practices and human engineering,” says Darren Copeland, NAISA Artistic Director.
An interactive sound sculpture exhibition starts next Thursday and runs until Sept. 7.

Officials say Waterscape by Lina Choi, produces water-like sounds through small motor-driven devices, with the surrounding sounds inviting listeners to slow down and experience a shifting sonic landscape.
Also being exhibited is the permanent sound sculpture Voice of the Water by Eric Powell. It includes a collection of recordings of the lakes and rivers in the South River area which can all be accessed by dialing a single digit on a rotary telephone.
